JTP Studios, London

JTP, award-winning international practice of architects and masterplanners, has relocated its London studio to the Grade II listed Pennington Street Warehouse at London Dock, Wapping. Gripple supplied pre-fabricated Universal Brackets and QT Compact Clamps for the suspension of all electrical containment, lighting and spiral ductwork, using Catenary, Angel and UniGrip.

JTP’s imaginative transformation of the 200 year old Pennington Street Warehouse has created a healthy and sustainable studio, and collaborative workplace. The detailing, lighting and materials create understated interventions that respect and celebrate the existing historic features and textures. Transformation of the basement vaults has been achieved by the removal of four stone columns and a section of the brickwork arches in the centre of the space, creating a 14 metre high atrium.

To help achieve this ambitious look, Gripple Catenary Kits were used to suspend services between the steel beams and bricks. This required no additional channel or structural steels to be installed. They created a secure, overhead span by running high strength wire rope between two fixing points, which was ideal for the application as there were no direct vertical anchor points available. C-Clips allowed for the suspension to be placed anywhere along the span, due to its innovative twist on/off functionality.

To further reduce installation times, the lighting was suspended using Angel Hangers. The ergonomic buttons allowed for rapid adjustment without using a setting key, with the neat design complementing the open plan office and showcasing an aesthetically pleasing finish.

Spiral ductwork was suspended using Universal Brackets and QT Compact Clamps; these arrived to site in precut lengths, eliminating the need for cutting on-site and allowing a more productive use of labour. Health and safety was also improved as no ‘hot works’ permit was required, and the speed of installation meant less time was spent working at height.

The design complemented the warehouse aesthetic JTP had envisaged, as products were specifically selected to enhance the open soffit design. Works were completed at least six times faster than if traditional methods had been used, and provided a sleek and modern finish for the client.
