Sundaram Clayton, the flagship company of the TVS group, is a manufacturer and supplier of aluminium cast products to global automotive OEMs. It has three manufacturing units in Chennai and one in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
SCL aims to increase the manufacturing capacity in India from 60,000 tonnes to 70,000 tonnes by setting up additional production lines. 40% of the products are currently exported to USA, Sweden and Germany, while the rest are locally consumed.
A new production line laid in the Chennai factory is housed in a PEB. Since the facility was inside a PEB, Gripple was a preferred choice by the consultant. The concern of time and load on the superstructure, were both taken care of by Gripple. The challenge was to design a system that could support busbar trunking and process pipes into a two-tier arrangement at a vertical drop of nearly 4.5 meters to 8.0 meters.
The initial idea was to weld cleats to the structure and take support by using tie rods. However, the installation process using tie rods would have taken at least 5 hours to install one line (approx 28 rmt) of the busbar and pipes, with 6 people required to complete the task. Installation using Gripple required 2 hours to install one line of busbar and pipes, with 3 people on site for the installation.
This project benefitted from Gripple’s Standard Hanger as it is up to 6 times faster to install than traditional hanging systems, simple to use and industry approved.
