Large-Scale Data Center Construction Delivered with Seismic Bracing Solutions for Multi-Trade Racks

This Southland Industries project involved the construction of two large data centers, a complex build that has taken place over approximately two years and is now nearing completion.

Large-scale data center construction requires extensive mechanical piping, HVAC systems, and plumbing infrastructure, all of which must be supported and seismically restrained to ensure operational reliability. The project demanded careful coordination between multiple trades, along with innovative engineering solutions to meet both structural load requirements and seismic design standards.

The challenge: Supporting complex multi-trade racks

One of the most significant challenges on the project involved z-bend piping installed on multi-trade racks. These racks carry critical piping systems into the building and across large data hall spaces.

The difficulty lay in connecting these systems under a roof structure with limited load capacity, while accommodating multiple trades installing equipment in the same area. This created a complex coordination challenge requiring innovative engineering, prefabrication strategies, and detailed on-site planning.

To overcome these constraints, the Calder Richards engineering team developed custom support solutions capable of carrying both gravity loads and seismic forces, ensuring uninterrupted water flow to critical data center equipment.

The solution: Gripple seismic bracing systems

Working closely with the project team, Gripple provided seismic bracing products and technical expertise to support the installation of mechanical piping and building services throughout the facility.

By integrating Gripple TecLoc seismic solutions into the support design, the contractor was able to create a robust and efficient system for suspending and seismically bracing HVAC, mechanical piping, and plumbing services across the large data center environment.

The lightweight and adjustable nature of the system helped simplify installation while maintaining compliance with seismic performance requirements.

Supporting innovation in data center construction

Through close collaboration between Southland Industries, Calder Richards Engineering, and Gripple, the project team delivered innovative solutions capable of supporting complex mechanical systems while meeting strict seismic design requirements.

“One of the core values we hold at Southland is innovation. With Gripple, I think that their values align right in line with us. They’re constantly trying to provide products that help our installation go better, help it go quicker, safer, and ultimately provide a product to our client that they’re happy with.”
